Lieutenant Colonel The Rev William Prosser Morris, Rector of Patterdale – whose book “The Records of Patterdale” – written in 1903 - provides a fascinating insight into life in the Dale. He also presided over the unveiling of the Patterdale War Memorial in October 1921 and wrote personal references for many of the men who volunteered.

Elizabeth A Little, sister of Tom Little, whose book “Chronicles of Patterdale” published in 1961 filled in some useful gaps in our knowledge as well as providing some good photos.

Ian Tyler – whose book “Greenside – A Tale of Lakeland Miners” includes a vivid account of the tragic events of 7th July 1952 at Greenside Mine

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website www.cwgc.org is brilliant and free

www.1914-1918.net is another great source of information, as is International Committee of the Red Cross website listing all the WWI POWs

The Australian War Memorial project website was very useful for our Australian Contingent and it’s free

Ancestry.co.uk and the nationalarchives.org have been the best  online tools, if a little expensive, with findmypast.co.uk also good - especially for RAF records. We are grateful to all the families on the ancestry site whose family trees we have used. These sites are being added to all the time so worth revisiting periodically.

And thank you to everyone else who very kindly assisted us throughout this journey - especially the families who have been in touch after finding the website including those of Robert Slee, Ernest Chugg, Thomas Murray, and many others.
