Then and Now Photos Glenridding

The charabanc  is possibly a successor to the one which was run from Crookabeck in Patterdale by Mr Pears around the turn of the century. It certainly looks popular! One of the drivers of this service was Billy Abbott. Glenridding Photo courtesy of Mrs Ann Pool.

Glenridding in 2014. The new shops were built after the First World War in the 1920s.

Glenridding was greatly expanded to house the workers from Greenside mine. It was also always a tourist destination with Millcrests Hotel and the Ullswater Hotel (now the Inn on the Lake) thriving before the war.  In addition to the Post Office shown in the photo on the left there was also a Cooperative Store where Catstycam and Alan Brown’s shop are now, and behind that there was a joinery workshop, where Tommy Coward, 102 served his apprenticeship. The Travellers Rest was going strong serving the thirsty miners and there was a Methodist Chapel  opposite the Ullswater Hotel to cater for their spiritual needs.
