Then and Now Photos - Patterdale School
The majority of the men listed in the Notes on the Fallen and the Roll of Honour on this site attended Patterdale School as children. We know that over 80 ex-
It is believed that Patterdale has had a a school since 1645. Thanks to the Revd WP Morris we know that the School was originally located where the School House now stands. It moved then in 1826 when it transferred from what is now the Rectory Stable block. Patterdale School on its current site was built in 1873, and extended in 1893. The photo below was kindly given to us by the family of Captain Dawson Bowman, and was taken around 1889 when Dawson was a pupil at the School, along with his siblings Matthew (1878), Joseph (1879), and Martin (1883). Again thanks to the book by the Rev WP Morris we believe the headmaster shown in the photo was Joseph Beck Philipson, who joined the school is 1884, and was head until 1924. Sadly we do not who each of the individual children are on the photo, but on the basis that at the time children would have attended school from around the age of 5 to 13 we have tried to list below the photo the names of those who could be on the photo based on the stories we have researched so far.

There are 37 children shown in the photo plus 4 adults. In addition to the Headmaster, Joseph Beck Philipson, pictured on the right, the following children may well be included in this photo, based on our research to date. If you are able to identify any of those shown in this photo or add to their stories please contact us.

If you can identify any of the others in the photo please contact us.
