Ullswater Football Club 1906

The second picture below shows Ullswater Rovers v Appleby at Patterdale on Good Friday 1906 – on a postcard with a photo by J Lowe of Patterdale.  We have no way of knowing who all the players are, but it is more than likely that many of them served in the First World War, with for example Ernest Lake’s obituary in the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald highlighting his time at Patterdale Football Club, and many of these players may still have been in the team in 1914. We think the Postcard was sent by a Glenthorne Jubilee Pattinson from Grassthwaite How to Miss Lena Smith who had been in service at the Ullswater Hotel.

The reverse tells of how the “Black & Whites” (Ullswater) had also  drawn 0-0 with Castletown Penrith – a good result! Glenthorne served in the RASC in World War One, and lived until 1973. He is buried in St Patrick’s Churchyard. Click here to see more on his life. This postcard was kindly lent to us by Jimmy Brown – the current Captain of Ullswater F.C, who lives at Deepdale Hall and is shown on the photo of the current team below.

Then and Now Photos - Ullswater Rovers Football Club

Ullswater Rovers has been playing at Patterdale since 1896. At its peak, thanks largely to the swelling numbers of workers at Greenside Mine they could field four teams, and recruited from all around Ullswater and as far afield as Penrith. The team is still going strong and has had much success over the years. So far we have found two photos of the team from before World War One. The first was unearthed by Warren Allison and showing the Ullswater Football Team in April 1914, just 4 months before war was declared. The photo was published in the Mid Cumberland and North Westmorland Herald on the 4th April 1914. It relates to Ullswater Rovers winning the Penrith and District Cup after a replay, when they beat Appleby 3 - 2. The names of the players as far we know them are shown underneath the photo. Within 3 years, at least three of the players, Sergeant William Stockdale (the man with the cup in the picture), Gunner Bernard Mulligan (the goalkeeper), and Gunner Thomas Watson (to the right of William Stockdale on the floor) had tragically in the War. Most of the others had served in the army, including Private Fred Dewis Sergeant Alfred Herd (who won the Military Medal in 1917), Lance Corporal Albert Potts and Gunner John William Birkett. Please see the 1914 Football Team page for details on all the players.
